Making Spaces Brighter

Making Spaces Brighter

Lighten up! Especially during these short winter days, adding as much light and brightness to a space brings a sense of warmth and cheer. Follow one (or all!) of these simple strategies to make your space brighter using modern home accessories.

  • Pick paint wisely: Some paint colors absorb light. Others reflect it. To brighten your space, choose a reflective hue. Ask for guidance at the paint store, and be sure to paint sample swatches around your room and check them at various points throughout the day.
  • Cast an even glow: Lamps scattered around add brightness, of course, but to maximize the glow, select lamps at different heights to create a uniform, shadow-free effect. Choose light-colored shades that complement your décor and bright LED bulbs to cast the brightest light from your lamps.
  • Accent for effect: Any decorative pieces with reflection – say, a metallic vase or a glittery candlestick – enhance the brightness of a space. Add candles to shine more light against those reflective surfaces.
  • Reflect natural light: Place mirrors opposite windows so that they reflect and amplify any natural light coming into your space. No windows? No problem! Use the same technique with lamps and candles. Placing mirrors across from light-emitting sources will enhance the quality of light in the space.
  • Layer textiles: Window coverings need to allow light in while providing privacy. Consider a two-layer window covering hung on a double curtain rod. Use a light-blocking layer that can be pulled closed at night. (Hang it with rings for ease of use.) Then, layer a gauzy or sheer curtain that – when the light-blocking layer is open – allows natural light to flow in while still obscuring the view.
  • Avoid dark and heavy: Some stylistic choices to complete a space include dark pieces. However, if you’re striving to lighten up a space, skip thick fabrics and dark colors that absorb light.
