Spruce Up Overlooked Spaces

Cool home decor for small spaces
Design efforts often center on the most lived-in areas of the home, like the living room and master bedroom. Overlooked spaces – like your kitchen pantry, hall closet, garage, and guest bath – don’t need much, but a few small flourishes can spruce up those forgotten areas. Bonus: Most of these are inexpensive solutions, or you can repurpose things you already have as cool home decor!

Add texture. Create depth in pantries and closets with a color infusion. Select a fabric – or wallpaper works well, too – to cover the back wall of a small space. Vivid hues and active patterns draw the eye past the space’s contents. Or, for a less permanent solution, line shelves with splashy, eye-catching prints.

Light it up. Typically, bathroom lighting lives overhead in plain, unflattering fixtures. If your sink has a little extra room, plug in a bright lamp with a fun shade. Not enough space for your makeup plus a lamp? Switch out overhead lights for vintage or modern fixtures – whatever inspires you.

Focus on the floor. Overlooked spaces benefit from an added floor covering. In bathrooms, skip the standard bathmat and choose a machine-washable throw rug. In a small hall closet, toss a faux sheepskin to add depth. In pantries, a runner adds color and texture, while being vacuum-friendly for any food spills. In outdoor spaces like garages that almost never get a design nod, consider painting the floor in various patterns and textures. (Hint: Search Pinterest for “painted concrete” for a ton of ideas.)

Clean up the clutter. The single best way to spruce up overlooked spaces? Clean ‘em up! Closets, pantries, garages, and small rooms tucked behind doors are clutter magnets. Sort through the mess, donating what you no longer need. Corral the remaining items in pretty bins or baskets. Print and affix neat labels to the bins to encourage ongoing de-cluttering.
