Last Minute Spring Cleaning Tips

spring cleaning for the modern homeIt’s already June and summer is officially right around the corner, and if you’re anything like us the annual spring cleaning venture may have taken a backseat this past season. Not to worry, we’ve come up with a few tips and tricks to make the most out of squeezing in a quick cleaning and mini-redecorating session before the summer solstice.

1. Deep Clean

All the bits and bobs that have gone forgotten during the year (i.e. baseboards, light switch panels) should get a bit of attention now. We found a few tips from Martha Stewart on spring cleaning to help guide you. Our personal favorites and most ahh-inducing include cleaning the refrigerator, kitchen trash can, fan vent in the bathroom, and dusting/reorganizing individual books on your shelves.

2. Sort and Organize Clothes

Prevailing wisdom states that if you haven’t worn it in a year, it gets thrown out. As much as we hate to agree, eliminating unused clothing from our wardrobe (no matter how much we paid for it) always leaves us feeling good instead of regretful. Donating to your local Salvation Army chapter is always good for karma but if you’re looking to make a few bucks back from those items that still have tags attached (guilty, many times over), going to your local fashion-forward consignment shop is the way to go. Check out our local favorite here. Nationally, Buffalo Exchange is a good bet for those unworn duds. For the pieces you’re keeping, incorporating storage pieces like our own Dashed Canvas Hamper for laundry and sweater storage is key to thoughtful reorganization.

3. Change the Mood

Spring cleaning…err..rather, almost summer cleaning is an opportunity to make a few quick interior design changes that will brighten the mood in your living space. Changing out throw pillows and blankets have an immediate effect, as does hanging new wall art. Textiles in general are a great way to do this; don’t forget about the bed linens!
