Add Dimension with Accents

Even well-designed rooms can feel flat if all the pieces are on the same plane. The perfect paint color and a suite of furniture that reflects you may not be enough to complete a room. To make a space feel vibrant, it needs dimension. With a few well-placed accents and a lighting trick or two, you can take your beautiful space and make it feel alive!

Mirror, mirror. A well-placed mirror can alter the depth and breadth of a room in an instant. Large mirrors along a blank wall make a small space look bigger. A bright lamp placed in front of a mirror doubles the light in a dark room. Tiny, vintage mirrors scattered on bookshelves or mixed into prints on a gallery wall create a three-dimensional feel to static displays. Mirrors serve so many functions, that it’s a great default for those blank spots where you’re just not sure what to hang or place. Look for mirrors with interesting frames to add another design element to your room.

Cast a glow. Candles add dimension to any space by mixing moving spots of light and shadow. The key to making candles add texture to your room is varying the heights of the candles and candleholders. This isn’t a place to be matchy-matchy. Instead, pick a single material like ceramic or glass, and collect a variety of pieces in that material. Combine holders that work for short, fat candles with those that hold tall, slender candles to cast a more even glow.

Create texture. Just like you dress in layers for fall, layering accents into your space can create an interest, dynamic texture. Allow bookshelves to hold more than just books. Fun accents, photographs, and vases add dimension. Apply the same technique to your walls. Rather than a collection of similarly-framed pieces, mix in different sizes, shapes, and dimensions. Combine the layers with mirrors from the step above, and your space will feel rich, vibrant, and dimensional.
