Tips and Tricks: Change Up Your Dog’s Routine

change your dogs routine
When we get really into our routines, it can start to feel like we’re on autopilot. We can do things without really thinking about them… and then five minutes later, we can’t remember if we actually turned in that assignment or not because we’re so disengaged. When we keep the same old routine week in and week out, we can run the risk of getting a little bored…

The same things can happen with our dogs. While routines offer structure, which can be really positive for nervous or anxious pooches, higher-energy pups may feel bored by a lack of interesting, diverse things to focus on. In the worst-case scenarios, this boredom can manifest itself as a variety of negative behaviors.

So change it up! Give your dog something new to think about by trying a different activity together. Here are our tips for new things to do to bust doggy boredom:

Participate in a competitive event: If your dog is super high energy, give her an outlet by participating in a competitive canine event. Depending on what’s available in your area, you can work on agility courses, Frisbee competitions, or even a speed event like flyball.

Make someone else’s day: There are a variety of therapy programs that use animals to help soothe patients in treatment and to brighten their day. If your pup is a people-pleaser and loves to be around humans, this might be the perfect new weekly job for him.

Teach some new tricks: You can always work in some training sessions throughout the week to keep your dog’s mind engaged and active. If you’re simply interested in having fun, try teaching a simply tricks like how to shake and roll over on command. If you want to be a little more serious, consider taking obedience classes.

We all get stuck in a rut from time to time – and the same can happen to our furry friends. Shake things up on occasion and find creative outlets for your pup’s energy and sociability levels. Beat boredom and try something new!
