Springtime Events for Dogs and Their People

Springtime events for dogs
Spring has finally sprung! If you’re looking to get out of the house with your pup so you can enjoy the wonderful warm weather and beautiful sunny days together, consider heading to one of the many dog-centric events being held around the country this time of year. Leave your weekend plans open and check out our list of fun springtime doggy events:

Splash Dogs & Dock Dogs Competition Events: Hang out and cool off at a dock jumping event! These competitions are like the ones you may have seen on TV: handlers throw a toy off a launch ramp and into a pool for dogs to jump in after. The dog who jumps the farthest is the winner.

Want to compete? You’re more than welcome to try this sport with your dog. Organization members and fellow competitors alike will be more than happy to help you get started.

In May, Splash Dogs is having five different events in various states (can’t make it this month? There are also events planned throughout the summer!). You can also view the event calendar for Dock Dogs, a similar sporting organization.

Disc Dog Events: Prefer for you and your pooch to stay dry, but still want to take in a little sporting action? You can look for a disc dog competition in your area by checking out Skyhoundz,

Weenies Running for a Cause: Yes, letting your dachshund race others of his breed in a big, national event for charity is a thing – and it’s been going on for 19 years! The Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals will be held in July at Los Alamitos Race Course and the proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Seal Beach Animal Care Center. Be sure to check out the website’s photos if you need convincing this is a sight to be seen.

Working Sheepdog Demonstrations: The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival will draw a crowd for its working sheepdog demonstrations. Onlookers are routinely amazed at the communication and partnership between handler and dog, and seeing these highly trained sheepdogs successfully guide sheep around in a deliberate fashion is always impressive.

Can’t make it to Maryland? The US Border Collie Handler Association has a list of sheepdog trial competitions you can check out instead.

Finding Events in Your Area: If we missed spotlighting your region, don’t worry! There are likely plenty of local springtime dog events for you and your pup to attend together. Try running an Internet search for “dog events + your city” to find community get-togethers, dog-friendly outdoor events, and fun competitions to participate in this spring. Look for local websites like this one, for dog lovers in Saratoga Springs, New York.
